PotNoodleTech Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Hi I wish to encrypt the previous backups that have ben taken in Veeam. I can't see an easy way of doing this and Veeam doesn't appear to have a guide on this. they say create a new backup job with encryption separate from the old jobs. That's no use to me - I wish to keep the old jobs, and make sure they are encrypted. I am guessing the only way to do this would be to new create backup copy jobs (with encryption enabled) of each old backup job, manually one at a time? Not ideal! Anyone have any clever ideas? Thanks
Steve21 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 There isn't anything official I don't think. Unless you're talking something like bitlocker on the physical disk they're on. You can script the creation of jobs in powershell if you have a lot to save time but depending on where you're storing them would be easier to just make the jobs encrypt from now on, and lock the old ones off Steve

Thanks Not being pedantic just making sure I understand, when you say you want to keep the old jobs, do you mean keep the old backups but make them encrypted? I don't think that you can retrospectively encrypt backups. Going forward you can alter your current jobs to to encrypt the backups. For the old backups, yes you could use a backup copy job to copy and encrypt or, as suggested, it might be easier to copy them manually to an encrypted device/disk.
PotNoodleTech Posted March 8, 2018 Author Posted March 8, 2018 Cheers both. Yes I wish to retrospectively encrypt all Veeam jobs ever taken. I will also be setting up bitlocker on the Veeam Server.
Steve21 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Out of curiosity though, why are you bothering to encrypt local backups? If the servers have bitlocker on already they'll be encrypted so local backups wouldn't need it, and if they're not the data can be got off the server so no need to steal backups Offsite is a bit different obviously but just curious Steve
PotNoodleTech Posted March 8, 2018 Author Posted March 8, 2018 Yes I understand. I am trying to cover all bases. I intend to bitlocker all servers so that if the servers or hard drives are physically stolen the data is encrypted. I also wish to Veeam Encrypt the Veaam jobs so that if someone ever for any reason copies one of the veeam backups onto different media, the backup remains encrypted. It's kinda like dotting the i and crossing the t - most people only do either of them but I see the need under GDPR to do both?
