Are old Flash desktop apps safe?

Hi,

 

(first post newbie here ... be kind :-) )

 

I have a number of very old (circa 2008) flash based desktop (*.exe) apps that use very old old "embedded" flash players.

 

These apps do not pick up the latest flash player installed on the Windows platform but use their own "embedded" flash player.

 

So, are these old desktop apps a huge security risk? Should I just suggest ditching them? (and hide from the teachers)

 

I'm just concerned that because the apps :-

 

1) are not using the up to date flash player bundled with edge or chrome (coz they are desktop apps) OR

2) Not using the latest player installed on the platform,

 

that they could cause problems??

 

They haven't caused any problems over the 10 years they have been installed but is that luck rather than judgement?

If the programs are just getting content from the local machine then I don't see why there would be a security issue (it's a closed system).

But obviously as flash stops being supported, you would have no way of supporting the software should it become glitchy. So it would be best of everyone if the school/department/teacher could find newer versions of the resources using more modern standards
