Random Lockups & system stutters.

Sorry if this needs to be moved to networking.

 

strange one this!

 

Lots of staff complaining of system "slowness and Stutters" example would be typing in word and slow to respond on screen, along with some random crashes to boot.

 

We have (I feel) a very good network. 10gbps backbone, very beefy servers, 15k sas drives and ISCSI luns with plenty of storage. Iscsi traffic is seperated, vlans setup and working properly, router not stressed. segregated wireless etc.

 

Seems to happen at lesson change & lunchtime mainly although i have seen things go funny at other times.

 

all "Seems" ok when looking at the networking and storage stats.

 

for the life of me I can't see where the issue is any ideas ?

Had some similar issues in previous schools and they were down to a few different issues: scheduled antivirus scans, scheduled shadow copies (problem with shadow copies caused it to lock up), Impero (although I am sure this issue no longer exists as over 5 years ago) and the other one was spanning tree config on a netgear switch were they have rubbish firmware that causes network problems.

 

I would start of looking at scheduled tasks/activities. Check event logs on the machines to see what is going on at that time. If it all ties to a single server like documents server, check it’s event logs to see what’s happening at that time.

 

You could always run a wire shark to see if any massive broadcasts happen at the same time too.

We were seeing this behaviour around a year ago. I found that something (Windows update?!) had interfered with dedupe.

 

Through the dedupe mic the schedule looked correct but digging further in scheduled tasks it was trying to run on hour most hits almost in sync with our lesson change.

 

I found deleting all of these tasks outside of the core business hours stopped the slowness and stutters that we were seeing

Probably unrelated but may be worth a look.

As soon as I granted permissions to all users (or just deleted) the Administrator's WebCache.dat everything returned to normal.

 

Identifiable by ESENT errors in the event log - a lot of them!

 

EDIT TO ADD:

 

Also have a look at how often your documents autosave. If it's every 10 minutes as default then that's great, but for a couple of staff for *reasons* I changed it down to 2 minutes. Cue slowdowns.
