IE7 Tabs

Hi,

 

We have IE7 rolled out here.. had it for ages.. but today a ICT Teacher has said that they cannot use tabs because they are greyed out.

 

Is this a GPO that does this or is this to do with the IEAK?

I've never come accross this, is it actually correct or are they telling pork pies?

Also,

 

If you've been to the machine and what they are saying is true, does it happen for other user profiles such as a pupil or admin. Worth trying it to find out.

 

If the problem is machine specific you could uninstall reinstall IE 7, although I'd have a look in the local gpedit settings for internet before doing this.

 

Maybe they are bringing up the About:tabs bit and not understanding it, set them up with a couple of default tabs for when they launch it??

 

Also Can they go to File | New Tab, or is that greyed out too?

I have confirmed this on all the classroom machines... so its not the teachers fault... also the same result for a student login.

 

File - New Tab is also greyed out.. but shows properly as a local admin.. so its some permission or policy somewhere..

Heres a microsoft list of Add Ons/Toolbars that IE7 doesn't like - have you got any installed / any similar ones installed.

Might be worth trying to isolate one machine to try things one by one and see what cures the issue.

 

Like you say it's probably a GPO or similar, I'm fairly interested in this as have been starting to roll out IE7 in a number of schools so I'll keep looking. If you find out please post, I don't want to have this problem myself!!

OK another forum says to run xmllitesetup.exe from the IE7 Setup folder.

I'd isolate a machine first though still.

 

Can't find anything about the GPO settings though and I havent got an AD here to go through arrrrrgh!!!

 

Apparently it fixed the problem in the Beta2 release.

Its probably this setting in a group policy object:

 

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Internet Explorer -> Turn off tabbed browsing

 

If you can not see this setting in your group policy console you will need to install the IE7 ADM files from here to update that systems ADMs

 

You should be able to track the policy down by running RSOP (Resultant Set of Policy) on a machine that is having the issue then you will be able to find the setting and it will tell you which policy it is that is applying it.

just a quick shout out but if you use tabs and you have ranger and you title check certain websites then the little kiddies can get round that by using the tabs

 

we have now disabled tabs for pupils!!

Yep we found that to i have disabled them aswell

We use AB Tutor here so hadnt thought of them not being able to see what they were surfing... Most teachers have all the screens on view anyway so they catch most of them.

 

I think the IE7 Adm files should do it... had forgot all about the.

 

I'll report back when solved.

I was interested to hear that tabs bypassed Ranger title checks.

 

Could you explain how you think this might be happening.

 

I've just checked here and title check seems to work on all the tabs in a session.
