OK, so some sitcoms have themes created for them, but another trend now seems to be songs that maybe aren't that well known but fit the show perfectly.

Eg:

Handbags and gladrags - The Office

Close to me - Smoking Room

Half the world away - Royle Family

Just for something I'm working on, I'm trying to think of a song (or more specifically an excerpt) that would fit well for a theme for a sitcom based around retail...shops/supermarkets/warehouses sort of thing.

And I don't just mean songs that have lyrics about money or buying, I mean songs that sound as though they would fit in with an intro to something......

Vague question I know, but I know the musical tastes here are veyr diverse so somebody may have a cracker of an idea :D

Oooooooh I dunno.

Money by Pink Floyd seems the obvious choice ;) Money for nothing by Dire Straits also.

I suppose you could go for something by Johnny CASH if you wanted to go for an abstract pun.

Seriously though, there's a LOT of songs...as I'm sure you're aware. Are you after classic rock style, electronica, acoustic, classical or something else?

"I Don't Wanna Rock" by Bowling for Soup sounds like an intro song at the start.

How about "Who will buy?" From Oliver. That way you can have a theme tune and also a cringe worthy dance number with all the staff, trolley boys etc...

Course the lyrics might be worthwhile changing a bit..

"Who will buy my wonderful bog roll...finest wipes you ever did see.."

or some such.

Problem with using any song by an artist with a record contract is going to be cost. However, this is the twenty-first century and all, so now we have the Podsafe Music Network. I know Norm Sherman was offering to write songs for money in his podcast the other week. Daikaiju (see Daikaiju (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) could probably be convinced, too.
