We use what RM call CC4 Anywhere which is a RM configured Citrix server. It is neither cost effective nor does it work very well. I would avoid that whole thing and just put in a standard RDS server setup

I think that is all CC4 Access is, a CC4 based RDS server (if I recall my conversation with them correctly). If you go this route just confirm that the options for mapping local resources are disabled (such as clipboard and printers), it could lead to a whole world of GDPR issues otherwise.

This is why we are looking into it. Instead of banning staff from using personal devices say they can only use them to use our RDS keeping things on our network and not on their computer.

 

Is setting up and working our licencing for RDS easy? Never looked into it before. Any useful guides / videos?

I would suspect that RM would have a tweaked GPO for an CC4 Access RDS server, not sure how dissimilar that would be to the standard workstation GPO on CC4. I would hesitate to recommend it but nothing to stop you from trying. If I were in your shoes I would be inclined to go with the CC4 Access solution though, at lest then you have the assurance that it will play nicely with CC4.

We replaced CC4Anywhere with CC4Access due to the cost of licensing approx a year ago. Running on a 2016 Server. Works very well for remote access.

 

You have the options to disable printers, clipboard etc just ask the RM Engineer when is setting it up.

 

It is basically just a CC4 Member server with the Microsoft RDS components on top. We haven't had any issues with it.

...So is RDS what used to be called "terminal server"? Or is it like Guacamole acting as a gateway/host between a remote desktop/browser and a real PC somewhere in school. My concern..given that RDP is known to be vulnerable...is how to make it secure.... I'm guessing you wouldn't use it without some kind of VPN?

RDS stands for Remote Desktop Services, of which the terminal server is one part. RDS is capable of application publishing a la Citrix, Ericom et al and also has a gateway component which lets you publish RDP sessions over SSL. You don't publish port 3389 directly to the internet any more, you publish the RDS Gateway to the internet instead. When you connect to a terminal over over this, you have to authenticate against the gateway as well.

 

What it's lacking at the moment is any kind of HTML 5 client (it's coming in an upcoming Windows Server release) so users either have to resort to a third party one (Guacamole as mentioned) or stick with the RDP client (which isn't a massive hardship as it's available on most major platforms these days)

So...is it not more cost effective...to leave a cluster of computers turned on....or set to WOL....rather than by licences for RDS...and that will avoid the hassle of installing apps (and often making registry changes) to allow them to run concurrent copies on server...

Not really - One server that 50 users can use would surely outweigh the power requirements of leaving 50 machines on and setting up 50 VPN usernames/passwords etc.
