Here are the full results of the survey there is breakdown by age, gender, income, social grade, politics, eu ref vote, region.

 

I find this to be a bit strange, as I go to the ballet regularly and there is no way that I'm posh. I started watching ballet in 1976 when I was at university. At that time I was heavily into punk, and indeed I still am. I also like early music, sculpture, paintings (especially pre-raphaelite) and wrestling. I just see myself as well rounded. (No sniggering at the back!)

From their choice of activities, only opera and ballet are ranked as definitely posh plus a more marginal posh on art exhibitions.

 

And older people are less likely to rank those things as posh than younger ones. I’m not sure they proved much with this survey.

 

I went to the opera for the time ever on Saturday. One of those “we really ought to try it one day” things. We saw Carmen and really enjoyed it... lots of instantly recognisable music

Carmen is a very accessible opera; the Ring isn't - you have to sit through a lot before you get to the "Apocalypse Now" tune. I've been to a few operas but I much prefer the ballet - better tunes and fitter bodies to feast your eyes on.

I’ve been to the ballet once... decades ago (pre husband) - I went with my Mum to see the Bolshoi perform Swan Lake.

 

My second ever visit is coming up at Easter when my daughter (now 25) has asked me to go with her to see Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella. She hasn’t been before and couldn’t find anyone else to go with her.

 

I just remembered that back in the late 80s we went to see the Jonathan Miller production of The Mikado, operetta rather than opera, with Eric Idle as Ko-Ko. His “little list” was very entertaining

And I guess the poshness of opera and ballet probably has a lot to do with ticket prices. The cast of Carmen was well over 100 performers. It’s no wonder it costs so much!

Here in Brum, it costs pretty much the same to go to Villa Park and St Andrews to see the football as it does to go to the Hippodrome, and in Manchester it costs more to go and see Man U play than it does to go to the Lowry and see the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
