Final cut and Logic over a network

Hi everyone

I was curious about using Final Cut and Logic over a network.

Do people here do that ( stream files from a SAN ) - or do you copy them from your San to local storage?

I am wondering how performance wise if people start editing videos how it copes ( of course it depends on what you are doing .e.g midi vs audio / big vs small video files ).

Apple recommend not to run Logic off a network but people seem to be doing so. I expect if you have a high performance file server it's not an issue.

I'd appreciate any advice from people doing this already ( and how do you back up your San? )

We have a Mac Server with 10gb network connection and a 12tb LACIE Thunderbolt storage unit and all the Mac Clients are 1Gb back to a 48 port switch with 2 x 10gb links back to the core switch and we don't suffer any issues when editing large logic/final cut projects over the network.

Whilst you can this fairly easily with Logic Pro, you need to do some research when it comes to FCP. Apple have just made it possible to access an NFS share using FCP. Don’t use AFS or an SMB share as this is fraught with issues.

I'd keep it local.

I am hearing from others you don't have to store it locally if you don't want free780. Of course keeping it local is easier but it also presents massive problems with classes not being able to sit anywhere (or someone sitting in your seat /mac with your final cut work on ) Edited February 15, 2018 by pixellip

From experience: if your network and storage are fast enough, and you don't put anything in the way that violates the way these apps expect file access to behave you can sometimes get away with hosting over a network.

 

However applications that are designed to expect file semantics and performance associated with local storage on a native file system will never work 100% reliably when tricked into working over a network.

 

 

Officially, No Logic can't use network locations, but Final Cut can work this way within very specific parameters:
