System Center 1801

System Center 1801 was released last night and appeared on our Licensing Site this morning.

 

Updated Operations Manager from 2018 to 1801 without issue, thought I'd try DPM 1801, but for some reason it won't accept our System Center product key, the key itself hasn't changed since System Center 2012 so not sure what the issue is.

 

Phone MS Licensing and they said they'd put me through to Support who then can't help as we have no support contract...

Welcome to the club, no go on 1801 DPM key, phoned them, please email, email says phone them. Just renewed our contract so SA not quite live yet. As long as you are on a ms contract, you should have SA, it can be found in the VLSC under SA on the top tabs and then pick 24x7 Problem Resolution Support, the SA ID you need for support should be in there somewhere! Or so I am told, I'm stuck waiting for the VLSC to add my new agreement, and I can't play with 1801 DPM

Brave? not really, I just want it on my new system which doesn't go into production until Easter, so I can test functionality, mainly ESXi/VCenter agentless backup, which they never got into normal 2016, but did into the last versions of 2012R2!

 

One backup to rule them all, with 10Gbe tendrils all over the place

 

Did manage to get a 27TB reading in DPM 2016 on the new backup server. Not..smug..at..all

Yer I've got servers running Windows Server 1709 that can't be monitored in Operations Manager 2016, so that was an easy choice. As for DPM, I'm probably going to have to rebuild the storage anyway as I really need dedup and its not working.

 

Also IMHO System Center 2016 has been very poor overall for us, I've had to rebuild VMM and OM a couple of times because they just broke, last time I had to bin our entire VMM database and start a fresh as it couldn't update its library. DPM 2016 also keeps losing volumes of backed up items even though everything is on the same volume. I'm hoping System Center 1801 does to System Center 2016 what System Center 2012 R2 did to System Center 2012.

 

First disapointment was that the much touted HTML OM Web Console still isn't compatible with iOS Safari...

Still looks like the same ISO file up in the VLSC, although I suppose they could have updated it and called it the same thing! Might try later

On ours there's no version number so 'System Center Data Protection Manager' or 'System Center Datacenter' for all of them

SCCM isn't part of the 1801 System Center release, apparently VMM/DPM/OM/SM/O will be updated twice a year but SCCM is sticking with a three times a year schedule.

All DPM 1801 ISO's removed from VLSC, Update in the description is new build tomorrow. Annoying really, as 2016 normal is no longer available to download!

Well, something is back up there, and now it shows a key is not needed, so it seems the fix is to remove the key security entirely! Will have to test later

Typically our DPM server is currently having a Consistency Check day but hopefully I'll get chance to upgrade...

Downloaded and updated, you still need a key! However you can use your System Center key, we have the same key for all the System Center software so I assume everyone else does to.

 

Update was painless, UI is still just as laggy as it was in 2016. When you're updating the DPM Agents the UI is all over the place, flashing between the percentage of the update and 'Error' and back to 'Update Available'...
