High Memory Usage

Got an odd one here.

 

My machine will start slowing down for no reason. I reboot and it will come back fine but will slow down after a few days.

 

 

I cant see anything in the task manager that is using more than normal.

 

Just for info:

Core i7 6700, 32GB DDR4 Ram 4 x 8GB sticks, 240gb Samsung 740 Evo SSD, 2TB Data Disk.

 

Any ideas?

Hiya.

 

We've recently had a problem with Sophos sporadically using 100% disk, which has caused a major slowdown on a machine. It's an issue that seems to happens sporadically, so that could be worth keeping an eye on?

 

We've also had a problem with the search bar causing slowdown, could be worth disabling that in registry and seeing if that makes a difference (not that it really does much in Win10 anyhow ).

It smells of a driver memory leak, have you got all the latest intel drivers? (or well the version before January as they can also cause issues due to meltdown patches)

Unsure what drivers i have.

 

Its an MSI Board. No new drivers on MSI website but found some newer chipset drivers. Installed and rebooted. Will keep an eye on it.

Motherboard manufacturers rarely release drivers tbh. I would also see if you can update your NIC drivers and the intel onboard gcard. I know several NIC drivers in the past have had memory leaks.

Well, Thought i would update this.

 

Still the same its about after 3 days i start loosing ram.

 

All drivers are up to date.

Do you mean slowing down or that fact it's using the RAM? As it's caching it which is standard if it's not being used at that time. (Showing 15GB cached in your first pic)

Just seems odd after a few days i'm loosing half my ram to "caching" and does slow down. (swapping between programs takes longer than it should)

 

I do sometime thing my SSD is to blame. (being a Samsung 750 Evo SSD)

Do you have SQL running for your NET2Support software as I'm sure when i got a tutorial on this for my school it was a requirement to look at a database.

 

This could be caching your memory somewhere on your server, i have also seen this on sims where the sql database is taking a lot of memory up and that is the only thing running on a server.

Have you looked at your activity on your resource monitor when your bring up task manager ?

Not my system. Looked thought the services and the only SQL i have is the "SQL Server VSS Writer"

That's how the caching is designed to work though If you're not using the RAM actively, it stores files in it to speed things up (Think 50% is cap or used to be). The caching shouldn't really slow anything down from that side.

 

If you're using a samsung disk do you have IntelliMemory service installed or are you still using Superfetch service? If you disable them "temporarily" and restart and see if it still increases. (It shouldn't but then I'd also say it won't run as fast either normally as you're removing that cache, but just as a test I mean)

Just superfetch? Will try disabling that and reboot. What the IntelliMemory?

I thought windows does this by design? Instead of having memory empty, it can footprint the memory for quick access and storage for data/files. If this is your home machine, can you run a resource hungry program like a modern game that uses a lot of memory and see what happens? If it completely fills the memory then there is probably a leak, or windows will begin to give back the memory to the application that needs it. Although the 3 day thing sounds very odd.

Superfetch disabled since my last post and didn’t make a difference.

Missing ram is usually drivers tbh, is the nic definitely Intel? also is onboard sound enabled?

No. There are Realtek (onboard and got one in a pcie slot)

The last time I had issues with high cpu and memory usage I disabled the Windows firewall and it dropped right down. I never actually found what caused it and the PCs were reimaged in the end.

Bizarrely I am starting to have similar issues with my machine right now. It brings down my whole rig when it gets bad and I can't even bring up task manager.

You on the latest CU? It takes around 10secs for Task Manager to open and show me whats going on. Im going to rebuild it if i get 10mins during the hols.
