Windows 10 1709 OneDrive Files on demand

Hi, Anybody using the Windows 10 1709 OneDrive Files on demand, especially mapping a drive on logon. Any good pointers would be helpful.

I've deployed it to around half our staff now and it's been highly successful. I redirect Desktop, Documents, Photos, Music, Videos to subfolders of their OneDrive folder.

 

Make sure you download the OneDrive group policies and use these to control OneDrive behavior. You'll probably be most interested in locking down the ability to move the OneDrive folder (we force it to be in c:\Users\%username%\OneDrive - School\ and disallow adding personal OneDrive folders).

 

This is a good basic start. Make sure to use the EnableADAL registry edits if you wish to enable OneDrive SSO with Office365.

 

We haven't done a fully automatic migration, I'm going around and redeploying staff laptops one by one, updating them to 1709 via SCCM and then migrating their user account to a new one that's OneDrive enabled. I usually mount their old user home drive, use a PowerShell script to go through it and check for invalid characters (OneDrive doesn't like files with things like # in the name), and then just move them into the OneDrive redirected files.

 

Sync times aren't bad, I had a member of staff the other day who had about 50GB worth of stuff that was migrated into OneDrive just fine overnight.

 

The only niggle I've had is that OneDrive needs to update and set it self up on first login, then the user must login a second time to enable folder redirection - but this only happens the first time they use a machine so not a huge deal, I just deployed an icon to the desktop that takes them straight into the OneDrive web ui as a fallback. This is why I have not deployed it to children's accounts yet.

I'm trying to push one drive as an alternative to USB devices (staff hate change!!) - presently I'm using the OneDriveMapper script to map One Drive for LTSB clients - looking at 1709 a the moment so I can take advantage of OneDrive Files on demand Edited January 25, 2018 by mdrabble

Has anyone got this to work who doesn't have SCCM? As far as I can see it's a good idea but next to useless as the setup.exe needs running as each user, with admin privileges (according to https://support.office.com/en-us/article/deploy-the-new-onedrive-sync-client-in-an-enterprise-environment-3f3a511c-30c6-404a-98bf-76f95c519668)

 

All I want is a normal installer that doesn't put EXEs in %userprofile%\AppData that I can run once per PC, and not have to then re-run if someone logs onto a computer they've never used before

 

Currently using the OneDriveMapper script but you can't really put anything big on there as WebDav has quite a low max file size (probably wasn't considered low when it was first implemented...)

It's by design. Putting it into SCCM is just really for pre-windows 10. It needs to keep up to date to support new features. The main issue is that the base Onedrivesetup in c:windows\syswow64 doesn't support files on demand. You can replace it but it's unsupported. A per machine updater is on the road map for Onedrive or through wsus. By default it's just a delay of 5 minutes. It really is geared primarily for 1:1 devices.

The Windows team really need to include the latest onedrivesetup.exe in the monthly cumulative updates.

It should update like everything else Windows does - Windows Updates. I'd rather not delay everyone 5 minutes every time they log on somewhere new or somewhere that they've not been in a while so their profile has gone.

 

Couldn't get it to work on my test PC anyway, ran the installer than tried to open onedrive.exe and nothing happened, nothing in the event log. Looks like our attempt to push stuff to onedrive will have to be "you have to use the browser to get at it" or onedrivemapper.

1803 will drop soon and be CBB by the summer, so planning for September it is safe to assume OD files on demand will be available “inbox”.
