IP Scope is running out

Our IP address scope for curriculum network is running out as our IP range currently is (current IP settings: 10.8.100.0 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). Since our current range only gives us 254 hosts, I contacted our ISP and they told me that I can choose by how much to increase the number of hosts. can some on advice me:

should I go for : 10.8.100.0/23 which gives me 510 host OR

should I go for : 10.8.100.0/22 which gives me 1022 hosts

 

Although I want to go for more hosts 1022 but is there anything that I should consider when choosing more hosts?

Go for the 1022 host option, it gives you more room for expansion and there are no real down sides to it.

 

Depending on your current familiarity with DHCP this post may help explain some things.

Just watch out for bandwidth flooding, with broadcast packets.

 

And make sure you have a reliable switched network and no hubs.

You could lower the lease time, this will free up more ip's. There is a school on here who have to pay for there IP addresses, instead of that they made there lease time to an hour. It works for them
