Unexpected keychain problem

Hi all,

 

I have just started getting keychain errors (the system was unable to lock your keychain) when logging on with a specific account. I understand that this normally means the users password has reset, I've dealt with that a number of times already. What concerns me is the account I am trying to log on with has not had the password reset, this I am certain of. If I try to carry on with the login I then get a number of windows from different programs asking to access the local keychain needing a password. I've tried the local admin password, the password of the user logged on, the root password, none work. I can't update the keychain password as it would require the "previous" password which does not exist since the account has always had the current password.

 

Please can someone explain why this would have happened when the password has definitely not changed and whether I will get any problems if I say to create a new keychain.

Is this the login or local items keychain? Login is normally attached to user passwords and so should local items but I have had a few occasions where the local items one has gone awry, probably down to sync issues in the past with mobility accounts. I've found the fix for that is to go into the user's library in their home folder, find the keychains folder and delete the folder with a random string of letters and numbers, then reboot. This will delete the existing keychain but it should recreate itself and get back to normal.

It usually asks for both. I just freshly imaged a mac, logged onto it fine with my "install" account (an AD account which has never had a password change) and yet after a reboot it brings up the keychain error the next time I log in with the same account. I cant just update the keychain as the password isnt accepted since it hasnt changed.
