Upgrade Mac Computers

I'm not really 100% with macs at the moment and for the past year or so my level of confidence is growing, and my golden triangle is going ok even with a .local domain, neverless

 

we have our Mac mini server along with 35 mac minis for the pupils using the same version of os that came shipped with them and that's el Capitan, i know macs can be very sensitive to change and they sometimes don't like to play ball even though the answer is right there in front off them.....

 

so my question is i want to upgrade and update all of our macs including the server but I'm not 100% which would be the best way now logic predicts that i do the server then do the clients now if i do this am i going to get into a pickle or am i going to be ok, i presume this question has been asked before so here it is again lol

What upgrades do you want to do (as in RAM, HDD etc)? Updates to the OS are usually straightforward - any Profile Manager profiles and certificates migrate over and management continues. Some software may bug out, depending on age, but compatibility is usually good. Updating the server first isn't a bad idea, as you may find there's a newer version of PM needed to manage the newer OS.

Backup the server, upgrade that, then try one client. Check all of your software for compatibility and if patches/updates are available. If that all goes well, do the others. Quite time consuming, but not horrendous!
