USB hard drive works on USB2 but not on USB3?

We've got a Western Digital passport USB3 hard drive, which on a certain PC only works in the USB2 ports and not in the USB3 ports.

 

The PC is Windows 7, but it definitely has the correct USB3 drivers installed - a regular USB stick works when plugged into the USB3 ports.

 

My manager suggested that he had seen this problem before and that it could be solved by backing up and then reformatting the USB hard drive on the affected PC, however in this instance that did not work.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions? I already tried updating the USB3 drivers but this did not help.

Tried a different USB cable? I've seen similar where there was a problem with the cabling on the extra pins. You could also try a USB 2 cable to see if that makes a difference?

Do you have a different USB3 device to hand you can try to see if it just the HD or all USB3 devices?

Tried a different USB cable? I've seen similar where there was a problem with the cabling on the extra pins.

This turned out to fix it. I don't quite get why only part of a cable could fail, but it's working now. Thanks!

It's just lots of wires inside, one wire broke.
