Hiccup121 Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 So, Long time video game player here, but short time Edugeek user. I've played many a game, however MOBAs never really appealed to me. I found their gameplay repetitive and sometimes, just not fun. My most recent significant other managed to finally convince me to pick up MOBAs in general recently however, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised once I started playing with someone else who knew and understood the game far better then me. We started with League of Legends, a name I am sure many of you are familiar with and that was an... Experience. I do like it though, it just takes some high willpower. Tried Smite which was an interesting change of perspective and pace, then we moved onto Blizzards Heroes of the Storm. I learnt quickly, that of the three, Heroes was the least popular online for it's simplistic gameplay yet confusing map mechanics, but I personally still like it. I don't really have a favourite personally, but of the three it's certainly between Heroes and League. On Heroes, I play Greymane a lot. His gameplay is really fun and very full on. You really have to be brave and take a lot of risks to go all out, and it's great fun. In League, I play mostly support. I find Taric wonderfully fun and very salt defusing simply from how he plays and what he says. Leona is also pretty fun, just a little difficult not having a reliable heal. Anyway, thought I'd make a thread for people to conglomerate and discuss various MOBAs and their mains and how they would counter other people's mains etc. It could help people, like myself, learn the characters of said MOBAs or understand the meta... Or just be a nice platform for people to chat about the games.
failnator Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Personally i dabble in a few MOBAs mainly between smite and HOTS but i always go back to League of legends. I know its got a trash community but i find it the most fun of the three. My main problem with the other two is HOTS seems to be very once you are loosing thats it on majority of maps and smite i personally didnt like having to use wasd and numbers for abilities XD maybe if i had a gaming mouse it would be better. Feel free to add me on any of them if im online im always on the edugeek discord.
jkuca Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 I play HotS most days. I just find it to be a blast. I wouldn't necessarily call it simplistic, but I would certainly call it streamlined. I just figure that it really trims the fat off of a lot of other MOBAs, and it has a deadset focus on teamfights, and objective play. Thats what MOBA's are about, right? I came from League, and I had a lot of fun playing it, but the games were too long and bloated, and not to mention that I just had a fundamental disagreement with runes and masteries, which can give players advantages before the game even begins, and they discourage the player from dabbling in other champions and roles. I mean, each to their own, in the end. I have never had a problem finding games in HotS, so even if it is the least popular "big" MOBA, the game still has a big enough playerbase to ensure that the game is still going to be around for a very long time.

Unfortunately it's also terrible for a balanced team, or any semblance of drafting. Rotating free heroes and purchased fixed ones mean that everyone gets into this idea of having 'a main' and often will lock it in without any regard to team composition because it's the only hero they're comfortable playing. The idea of drafting a team/outdrafting your opponents is nonexistent in casual play. Personally the only MOBA I've ever been able to get into is DOTA 2. But the learning curve can be pretty high.

As someone who play league often i do have to agree it is annoying when people just pic their "mains" not matter your or your opponents team comp. Main reason i would love to make a team for a Moba so you can actually have a team of people who will listen and adapt. Never really got on with dota never got comfortable with it.

The recent preseason update completely changed runes and masteries. It streamlined them into a single system called Forge your Path which is completely accessible to everyone as soon as they start playing the game. It was a fantastic way to balance it and make it fairer. The only hitch I really hit with it, is that it is very hard to come back from a bad start, but as long as you focus on teamwork, it is possible and can be very rewarding.
failnator Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Im still getting used to them mainly due to the whole keystones changing. I just want them to free up the prebuilt 5 as its very annoying only having 5 atm.
Hiccup121 Posted December 15, 2017 Author Posted December 15, 2017 You should be able to get two for free? I find the two custom ones as well as the prebuilt five usually suffice over most of the champs
