Missing SYSVOL & NETLOG share after DCpromo

Hi All,

I have just added my 2016 server to my school domain - DC is server 2008R2. The functional lever of the domain is server 2008R2.

 

When I promoted the 2016 server to a DC - there is no SYSVOL or NETLOGON shares on the 2016 server. I had a quick search and found its not uncommon for this to happen.

 

I found this in the event viewer - it was one of the messages seen during the upgrade

 

 

File Replication Service (FRS) is deprecated. To continue replicating the SYSVOL folder, you should migrate to DFS Replication by using the DFSRMIG command.

 

If you continue to use FRS for SYSVOL replication in this domain, you might not be able to add domain controllers running a future version of Windows Server.

 

 

DFSRMIG /GetGlobalState

 

DFSR migration has not yet initialized. To start migration please

set global state to desired value.

 

 

Has anyone seen this issue and is there a quick fix for it ?

Quick update -

Running through the steps above seem to have fixed the problem - both missing shares have appeared on the server.....

There's an explanation here and a "streamlined" guide here on the technet site, which will hopefully be useful for anyone seeing similar issues. This should still have been in Windows 2016 unless you're using the absolute latest build hot off the presses, but upgrading ASAP (ideally before promoting a new DC) is still the right way to go to fix things.
