Wireless Link Between Sites

Hello,

 

I am looking at installing a wireless link between 2 sites. They are around 2 miles apart from each other (as the crow flies). I have heard Ubiquiti stuff can do the job, but there are that many different types I am not sure what is best.

 

Can you assist selecting the equipment please?

Are you looking to do this yourself? Personally I’d be reluctant to and I’d get this done properly

First things first, do you have LOS between the buildings?

 

https://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-elevationtool.html will give you topographical information, obviously you'll need to check for trees and buildings. 2 miles is doable very easily and the Ubiquiti stuff makes alignment easy with GPS etc.

I'd be tempted to do it myself as long as there is line of site. The ubiquiti airfiber stuff looks incredible for the dosh https://www.ubnt.com/airfiber/airfiber5/

From what I understand line of sight isn't an issue for such a short distance.

I have 3 ptp links for cctv but not 2 miles worth

Line of sight is important for any wireless link like this and you still need to work out the Fresnel zone if you want decent performance. Trees/leaves will ruin your day very quickly at 5GHz, less so at 2.4GHz but then you're contending with the rest of the wireless population. Buildings will cause you major problems.

 

If this really is PtP then you want as narrow a beam as possible at 2 miles. The Ubiquiti NanoBeam AC series would suit a situation like this.

Cambium stuff is good as well, we have some of their stuff linking our primaries to their secondaries. One of the links is about 2.5 miles.

 

I would seriously get someone in to do it though. I know that the Ubquitis look attractively cheap but it’s worth getting a specialist in to do it, even if they end up using Ubquiti (as another of our primaries do).

That depends on the type of link, We used to have a point to point from school to our sports centre (down the road), It needed to be in sight, so had to be extended on a pole to get above houses in the middle that were being built.

 

While not affected by small winds/rain any large storms/winds/leaves/trees etc that get in the way would cause an impact normally unless you're getting a specifically big setup
