Problems with KB 4033631 and KB 4049411 failing

I have a neighbour's 2 year old laptop Win10 laptop on the bench. She uses it occasionally and has Kaspersky installed on it.

 

To cut a long story short, having not used it since 25/11, windows update last night took forever and looking back the above KBs failed to install. Today it is, apparently, refusing to connect to her printer (untested), and threw up an error about accelerometerst.exe (an HP module that parks the disk head when you move the laptop) failing to start.

 

Kaspersky is flashing and says it wants her to remove little used programs... One of those is WindowsUpdate (alarm bells ringing)

 

I tried to run win update and it got stuck at 45% download so I disabled Kaspersky and it's now at 95% and stuck. I'm leaving it for another hour before I start throwing things at it.

 

Firstly, has anyone had problems with these KBs? I can't see anything obvious in the event log.

 

She wants Kaspersky off and has bought McAfee already.

 

My plan of attack is along the lines of remove Kaspersky, run malwarebytes and emisoft emergency kit, try windows update again...

 

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Update on progress.

 

Kaspersky is gone.

 

Emisoft is doing a rootkit scan and has found a trojan 50% of the way through. I am guessing there will be more. No point worrying about windows update until it's clean. I will hit it with Malwarebytes as well and if it still doesn't look great then I shall be suggesting she pays someone to wipe it and start from fresh. (There's history with this person.I am not getting sucked into being her IT support. This is very much a one off)
