Missing 200gb

Hi

 

came in this morning to alerts on the file server share (win 2003). 273gb partition with spare disk space of 17mb!!! wtf!!

 

ran a folder size utility which comes back with 80gb intotal for the share, so wheres the other 200gb gone?

 

manually right clicked each top level directory and selected properties and give or take a few kb, my manual method and the folder size utility come out around the 80gb mark..

 

anyone got any advice?

use WinDirStat to check each folder for file size.. very easy to use - will show you where that space has gone.

Only ideas I have would be to look for hidden/system files and investigate the possibility of a failed disk, assuming you're using Raid 5.

Thanks for that Mike looks a useful tool for future..

 

Update: Indexing service had crashed over night and within the system volume information folder (had to grant permissions to folder as access denied by default), was a nice large 195gb file...

 

stopped indexing service and deleted catalog, space recovered..

 

im not sure if i will recreate the index sevice catalog, does any one have an opinion on its usefulness or links to any decent articles on its pros or cons..

 

ive disabled the search function via gpo for users so not sure what benefit will be gained by turning it back on..

you're meant to look at index files and log files and stuff on a regular basis... then delete them (!!)

 

They get to enourmous sizes all the time here... hehe.
