jslate1980 Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 Hi Just wondering if there are any alternatives to Socs calendar solution? My school is after a online school calendar system that provides parents the ability to save an event from ics file to their own calendar. We are looking for one calendar to replace three types of calendars we publish. We print a term one which goes to parents but usually goes out of date quickly. Then one member of staff maintains a yearly calendar that is uploaded as a pdf to the school website then another member of staff types the content from the pdf onto the school website. Socs looks good but I’m interested to see if there is anything else out there? Jon
edmokeski Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 We use My School Portal for our school calendar. We’ve replaced all of our printed calendars. Parents can subscribe to ics feeds, which is a big win (better than adding events piecemeal), staff can all add events, and they are moderated by the school office. Events are also tagged, eg by year group, to help parents separate the wheat from the chaff. So as a parent I can sub via ics to all the year 7 events, get them in my phone’s calendar, and not get all of the sixth form events that are nothing to do with my kid. Definitely worth looking into! In our case, as far as sport is concerned, we use an integration with SOCS to pull across all the sport data, but MSP is really sufficiently feature rich to manage your sporting calendar on its own as well. 1
TechMonkey Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Just checking you know SOCS can do ICS subscriptions?
Jamman960 Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 we use the Timely wordpress plugin to publish the calendar, I previously embedded a google calendar Calendar creation is handled via excel at the moment having dragged our secretary away from using word... I'll probably shift across to using outlook/exchange for creation then export/import via ics format. As of this academic year we no longer issue a printed copy so there's less of a reason to use excel We've had to purchase the csv import addon for timely in order to import via ics/csv - it can sync with Google calendar but that dosen't tag/categorise anything
SimonHooker Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I wasn't aware of Timely, looks pretty good. We've previously made use of Calendarize it! for some of our Wordpress sites too, also provides very configurable calendar options. If you fancy trying to DIY, then so far the best JS library I've found for calendars is FullCalendar ( https://fullcalendar.io/ ) - very extendable and able to be reconfigured. I have a feeling it might also be the one that SOCS use or have used in the past.
