I've got a PC sat in my hallway that boots ACSOS - a customised version of Slax Linux that can boot off small, read-only media. I had it running in our sixth form for a while, but the sixth form complain too much and now they have Windows XP machines. I've got some older machines and a job-lot of bootable CF cards off eBay, I'll see if I can get it going again. Note: Slax's website has been "revamped" at some point and is now pretty much useless, but it was really good!

 

I would be tempted to look at some Edugeek appliance type builds:

 

Edugeek E-Learning platform (Moodle, Elgg etc)

Edugeek Network Monitoring System ( Nagios, cacti or opennms)

Edugeek Proxy Filter (Squid, Dansguardian etc)

 

Come Monday, I'm setting up Xen virtual machines to do Internet gateway and transparent web filtering, DNS, DHCP and a number of file servers. Moodle server to follow soonish. These will be Ubuntu Server 7.10 based appliances. I'm also writing a management console to monitor virtual machines and move them between machines. What would people suggest I do to go about packaging these as "portable" VM images of some kind? Does anyone use Amazon EC2, do they have some kind of portable file format I can use?
