Hello.Whenever I have Mocrosoft Excel open to read .xlsx documents, it brings the whole system operation to a crawl. Forget about using a browser whenever that program is open; it slows everything down. So I am looking for some .xlsx opening alternatives..Thanks in advance! Edited October 28, 2017 by Joelgas

OpenOffice should open spreadsheets.

 

This sounds like it’s a hardware or bad office install fault.

I find if you choose your document when office is already open then it's quick but do it the other way round and it's a go slow. Always been the same with office, open the program first before selecting file especially if your machine is a bit older and not enough RAM.

A couple of questions if you don't mind?

What version of Office are you using and are the speadsheets based on a remote server and accessed via Onedrive or Sharepoint?

Honestly, I have no idea what is Onedrive and Sharepoint. I am using Office 2013. These documents were emailed me.

Are you opening those documents directly from the email link - or have you copied them to your own local folder first?

 

I rather suspect that they are being opened from some remote platform/storage.

There are dozens of programs that can be installed on your computer to open Microsoft Office documents and other office or rich-text documents (for example XLSX Open File Tool) Also you can try LibreOffice. It is available for all major platforms including Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linux. Google Docs, available from Google.

Have you tried opening Excel first and then File > Open, that seems to solve similar problems for us at the moment.
