Accessing external HD via Cache

I'd like to try seting up an external 500GB HD on a port on our SMARTCACHE2 so that we can access content on the HD from our Sony HandyKam. Curently I have 9GB of clips on the 30GB HandyKam HD. Our SMARTCACHE has only circa 10GB spare on it's own HD so the external seems to be a way forward worth exploring. Otherwise it's going to be a case of attaching the 500GB HD to a notebook / smartboard set up and accessing the trip footage that way. Anyone got experience they could share with me on this one please.
