I'm looking into testing some switch redundancy using multiple links,.

Am I correct that Link Aggregation is the best way to do using this using an LACP type rather than static?

Also, on both the source and destination switch should the ports be set as active or passive?

 

As it's a switch to switch link, are there 2 different configurations required whether I want this to be:

 

Scenario 1: 1 link primary active - if that experiences issues, switch to the second link

Scenario 2: both links active and traffic balanced across.

 

In both scenario's is a link has an intermittent ping issue or fault/loss of connection, the remaining link we continue working almost immediately?

 

How does the above fit in with STP?

You can use ether channel. When you aggregate links using ether channel then there is no STP because it is only one logical channel rather than multiple single channels.

Does the Active/Passive settings matter?

If I get a faulty module which results in intermittent pings will it automatically still failover to the remaining link, or does the link have to be physically down (connection wise) for it to take place?

I've done some testing between 2 switches and if I physically disconnect a cable from one of the LAG ports I get 1 ping loss then traffic goes over other cable.

However, in the event of a dodgy link and I want to disable one of the ports, I see that this is not possible as it disables the entire LAG .

Is there any way round this so in the event of a dodgy link I can remote in and disable the issue link keeping the other one remaining?

Can you remove the port of the faulty link from the lag? Then stp should kick in and kill the port presuming correct costs are setup. Or you could then disable the port.
