Encrypting File Shares Help

I have been asked to look into Encrypting our File Shares. I have found a couple of things online including some articles on EFS but have noticed some down sides to using this, one being that you cannot grant Groups access when using EFS

 

Has anyone got any experiencing of encrypting file shares or recommendations of solutions I can look into or test?

If its not a silly question what are try to achieve by encrypting your file shares?

 

Encryption on the host makes sense if your concerned about the hardware being stolen. Encryption on end user devices also make sense but encryption on your file shares sounds alot like your adding unnecessary overhead.

An example of what happened here when I accidentally enabled efs encryption for workfolders (only used on already bitlockered laptops), teacher does presentation and saves it to share. Teacher then copies presentation to usb stick to show at another school, teacher plugs usb stick into other schools pc, she can see all her files however cannot open any of her files because they are encrypted, its efs so no way to enter a password etc. to unlock them. Its something worth thinking/planning for if you use efs file encryption.
