garethEds Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 The other year someone posted a link on here to a daily announcements server installation that used mySQL etc etc. Staff could log in and post to the board. Then their browser homepage was set to the intranet page and staff could filter the daily annoucements. Anyone remember it? Otherwise - can anyone recommend a Wordpress template for this? Cheers Gareth
colly72 Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 We use Wordpress together with custom posts. The staff member responsible for posting the announcements adds a new custom post, and also sets a scheduled publishing date (optional) and and expiry date (using the post expirator plugin). We then use Revolution Slider to format the posts/announcements and display them in a nice slider format, on our intranet home page. Works really well for us.
garethEds Posted October 18, 2017 Author Posted October 18, 2017 Cheers @colly72 - this is what I've been working on today. Just putting the basics in place using WAMP and Wordpress - no design, just making sure the structure works and can be accessed over the school network as an intranet page. Once I'm happy this works and staff can choose what they want etc etc then I'll start jazzing it up. Thanks for your advice though - some interesting stuff to look at. As it's internal only for now, I'm looking at putting in the plugin that lets us authenticate against our AD. That should be pretty cool. Gareth
mdrabble Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Have you had a look at this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/175168-student-staff-home-pages.html Thanks to @FragglePete for sharing his page & code, works well and uses PHP, MySQL and IIS. Side tiles can be displayed for all or can be displayed depending on AD Groups. I use global and staff tiles and some admin only tiles. Notices are simple to add with date ranges to display the messages, so staff can enter messages with a future date and message won’t appear until that date etc Admin access is controlled via iis/NTFS permissions. I’ll post some screen shot tomorrow if that helps. 1
FragglePete Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 That's good to hear that your using it. Humbled. I have done some work on it recently.... 1. Page background is pulled in once a day and saved to the server; this saves your bandwidth so it's not asked for for every time its loaded. Also, keeps things working when the internet connection goes down. 2. A lot of work over recent months that has it now showing Achievement Points from SIMS for each Student. This runs a report using Command Reporter on a schedule and puts each student totals in to the Database. Show's a little reward icon for each 100th House Point achieved now. 3. System also now automatically e-mails their Head of House and Tutor when a student hits each 100th House Point - this is so the tutor can give an award. 4. Just recently added a notification of a detention to the student as well - reminds them on the day they have a detention. We've only just started doing detentions in SIMS this term, so still tweaking this bit at the moment. 5. Currently working on Behaviour Point notifications as well - again, we've only just started doing behaviour incidents in SIMS and when a student gets 5th Conduct Slips, they are supposed to get a detention. I'm currently working on the code that checks for this, and again it will notify the Tutor that they need to take action. Still very much in progress that bit. Pete 1
