Windows 10 ADMX Templates

Hello,

 

We currently have a Server 2012R2 domain running Windows 7 SP1 workstations. We are now testing Windows 10 and I've came across an issue that I no will be resolved by changing a setting in the Windows 10 1703 ADMX template for the Control Panel.

 

Should I copy and paste all of the ADMX templates from the PolicyDefinitions file on the 1703 client to the central store or should I just copy up the ADMX template required i.e. ControlPanel.admx?

 

What do you guys do?

 

If I need to copy and paste all of the files, I take it that the files are backwards compatible and it won't screw up my Windows 7 clients?

Copy all the admx and the adml.for en-us into the sysvol/policies/policy detentions folder. Do this from the official download from Microsoft. There is backwards compatibility to Windows 2000 in many policies so you should be fine.

I usually just make a copy of the existing and then overwrite. I did this a few weeks ago and there's no issues with mine (Server 2012r2 and Windows 7 Clients) that I know of

As @free780 mentioned above, download the latest templates from Microsoft's website since the local PolicyDefinitions folder doesn't contain the full set of Group Policy templates (see thread links below).

Traditionally, Microsoft makes available a download of all the latest ADMX files all in one shot.

 

The basic rule of thumb would be to simply always just overwrite what’s already in the Central Store *WITH* what Microsoft provides.

 

So if you had any “extras”.. that’s cool, they just stay there and you can use them. But you’re always overwriting the old ADMX files with the LATEST ADMX files.
