SIMS and Office 2016

We have a number of SIMS reports that produce an XML file that links to a Word template. This works fine on Office 2010 and also on Office 2016 until very recently. Instead of correctly opening the Word template and importing teh data from teh XML file, the Office 2016 machine opens the XML file in Excel. Any ideas?
