I upgraded a iPad Air 16gb to ios 11 recently - it had around 3GB free before the update and this has crept up to nearly 6gb after the update.

 

Quite pleased with that but not sure how its managed to do this, is iOS11 a more compact OS?

 

Not complaining, it extends the life of this ipad a bit longer - not something you'd normally associate with an Apple update!

I'm guessing it got rid of some pre loaded updates?

Possibly, its a personal device so has been kept 'lean and clean' in the past, and has an occasional factory reset but nothing has release as much space as this!

I think they’ve done something with photo compression, a recent version also included a better file system

 

Fingers crossed it does the same for the 32gb airs our eyfs staff keep complaining about... getting a bit tiresome now

iOS 11 no longer runs 32-bit apps so they removed some junk doing that. That means no more Flappy Bird too! :)

Installation: Free space

Every major iOS update that I’ve looked at since I started writing these reviews has reduced the amount of free space available on your iPhone or iPad; the one exception was iOS 10.3, which appeared to free up a few hundred megabytes when converting your filesystem from HFS+ to APFS.

 

iOS 11 introduces a lot of new stuff, but its total lack of support for 32-bit hardware and apps gives Apple the opportunity to strip out older app libraries and other files needed for 32-bit software compatibility. That’s not likely to add up to a ton of space, but it’s one benefit of Apple’s control over its ecosystem and its never-look-back approach to software compatibility.

 

If Apple use the HEIF image format for all of the images in the OS and bundled apps that would save a lot of space too.

 

iOS 11 introduces support for the High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC, sometimes called h.265) and the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF). Eventually, these formats will completely supplant h.264 and JPEG (respectively) as the default movie and image formats in both iOS and macOS, though hardware limitations are going to draw the transition out over several years despite Apple’s tight control of its hardware and software.

 

The goals of HEVC and HEIF are the same: both can either maintain similar image quality at a lower file size or improve quality and/or resolution while keeping roughly the same file size.

To take HEIF images or HEVC videos, you need an A10 or A10X Fusion processor or newer. You can view these files on any iOS 11 device, however.

In the transition from iOS 9 to iOS 10, Apple changed the way it calculated free space on iDevices. iOS 9 switched from Base 2 counting (in which there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte, and so on) to Base 10 counting (in which there are 1,000 bytes in a kilobyte, 1,000 kilobytes in a megabyte, and so on). Windows and Linux typically use Base 2 counting, but most hard drive makers use Base 10 counting; macOS switched from Base 2 to Base 10 back in version 10.6.

 

The change had the side effect of making it look as though iOS 10 increased the amount of free space on your device even though it actually reduced the amount of available space by a few hundred megabytes. This may also have been true of the space that iOS 10.3 and APFS appeared to save; devices might report having more free space, but they may just be calculating the amount of free space differently than before.

 

But iOS 11 doesn’t change the filesystem, and it’s still using Base 10, so this comparison should be straightforward. Per usual, it looks like you will generally give up a few hundred megabytes to install the update, at least on a freshly reset device; your experience upgrading a device in the real-world may differ, but the best you should be hoping for is to break even. Apple seems to be the most concerned about breaking even on 16GB devices, which makes sense; it's just not clear what the company is giving up to make that happen.

 

Finally, while it has no impact on the actual amount of storage space in your device, Apple has changed the “capacity” measurement in Settings so that it shows not the formatted capacity of the device but the amount advertised on the side of the box. This has no real-world implications, really. It’s just a thing.

Odd then as my device has very few photos on, and is showing a gain of 3GB over the previous 10.12 ios installed!

Do you mean 10.2.1? :confused: :)

 

If you skipped 10.3 that might explain why you are only now seeing the improvements from the new filesystem.
