ded2je Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Hi, I am trying to finalise our 6th form timetable and have an issue which I know can be solved, but can't quite remember how to do it. We have 5 teaching blocks in 6th form which cover the whole timetable. I want to put a lesson out of block, this is possible from a student timetable point of view as the students who opted for that option don't do a lesson in the block I want to move it to. How do I do this without it knocking all the lessons in the original block out. Many thanks Jen
ITBadger Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 Hi Jen, Not completely sure that this is appropriate as I don't deal with 6th form timetabling, but it sounds as though this is something that Alternative Curriculum could be useful for. You can create a category / lesson and assign Teachers and Rooms to it then assign the students that you want to remove from the original block to the alternative lesson using Curriculum Assignment by Student in SIMS. Sorry if i've got the wrong end of the stick, but that is how I deal with similar issues in KS3&4. Dave.
ded2je Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Hi, Thanks, that would work, but when I was looking at it there is way of doing it, as it turns the mapping squares from yellow to black so showing that you have two blocks operating in one slot. Jen
Cache Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 If it's the whole block (all lessons timetabled within that block) then just drag it on top of the existing timetabled block and tick the box to clash and lock it. If it's just a single lesson for one subject within the block, first increase the minimum number of periods, build your block so that the lesson you want on it's own is on it's own line and the blank and protect the other slots. Then again drag onto the bands screen and tick to lock/clash it. 1
ded2je Posted September 11, 2017 Author Posted September 11, 2017 Hi, Thanks for your response cache, I have managed to do the bit where you say if it's a single lesson for one subject within the block, first increase the minimum number of periods, build your block so that the lesson you want on it's own is on it's own line. When you say blanks and protect the other slots, do you mean where the lesson should have been? Also when I was trying to drag it into a new slot, I was doing this by left clicking the first Colum and then dragging it on to the correct space on the bottom left timetable, the issue is every time I do this it's says there is a clash and will only let me put it there if I displace the original block. Jen
carter62 Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I do this by adding the lesson in the desired block in NOVA 6 as normal, then when you go to student curriculum in SIMS use the ADD ACTIVITY TAB - CHOOSE THE ACADEMIC YEAR THE LESSON IS IN - TYPE =ANY - SEARCH and all the lessons not on the students timetables will appear. Highlight the lesson you are looking for and it will show up on the pupils timetable then tick the box and save. It sounds a bit long winded and you have to do it to each student individually but it works for me. You can add a student to any class across the whole curriculum this way. Hope this helps.
Cache Posted September 11, 2017 Posted September 11, 2017 I'll have to try and post something tomorrow, but where the box pops up that asks you what to displace, you can tick (I think) to tell it to lock and clash rather than displace. nce you do that, the bands screen will displace a black square instead of the yellow (or other colour if you've enabled colours).
ded2je Posted September 12, 2017 Author Posted September 12, 2017 I haven't had that option, but maybe it's because I am doing it on the wrong screen. Will post a screen shot if I can to check. Thank you so much for your help, much appreciated.
sadlerp Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Hi Jen In the Model tab increase the Minimum Periods to an extra 1 (for 1 period), go back to the block and schedule the extra period onto the day/period you want (when it comes up as Displaced Units Lock/Clash all), you can then either move an existing staffed/roomed period or staff/room the new period. Hope this helps Pam
ded2je Posted September 19, 2017 Author Posted September 19, 2017 Hi, I have now attached the screen shot. Basically have managed to increase the number of periods, and then to place it have been left clicking on the first column (where it will normally display the period) and dragging it down to the relevant period on the bottom left timetable bit. The problem is the only option it gives me is to displace the lessons that are already there, which I don't want to do. @Cache mentioned that it should give an option of clash, but doesn't seem to happen. Can anyone help. Many thanks Jen
Cache Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 (edited) Sorry Jen, I got tied up with other things. You are doing exactly the right thing, when you see the box asking you to displace it, you will see that the right hand side says lock/clash: Put a tick in that box, then the box will turn Green because it has a hard lock on it like so. When you then look at the bands screen, you'll see that that slot has turned black because it now has more than one block in it (ignore the number of black boxes visible on our screen, we have a lot of clashes....) If on the Displace window you don't tick the Lock/Clash column then it will simply swap the block out as you've previously discovered. Hope that makes more sense? Edited September 19, 2017 by Cache 1
ded2je Posted September 19, 2017 Author Posted September 19, 2017 So I need to drag it to the place on the timetable still and then that screen should appear? Many thanks for your help.
Cache Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Yes, as soon as you get the displaced units window you should be good to go! 1
ded2je Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 (edited) Gave this ago, but it seems insistent on displacing other lessons, this time a group of yr10 lessons! The newly assigned post 16 lesson went yellow so no green appears. The post 16 block then looks fine. It's only when you flick through the blocks for other years that I can spot anything dodgy and that's a Year 10 option block which has now gone blue and the timetabled slot dispersed. It just doesn't seem to want to clash! Is there a setting somewhere that is incorrect, or do I need to lock the year 10 lessons in first? Edited September 20, 2017 by ded2je
Cache Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 It shouldn't just displace things, you should always get the displace units window as far as I'm aware?
