Theldron Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Hi all, Hope everyone's summer plans are going well. First thing I just want to thank Al_NetSupport, I have got NetSupport DNA installed and running, what a bit of kit, still finding my way through it. Does anyone know if i can setup an alert if a LAN cable is unplugged via DNA? Cheers
Al_NetSupport Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Hi @sadams1980 Thanks for the kind words and i hope you are enjoying the peace and quiet in school. As you ( may ) have discovered we have an alerting module in NetSupport DNA that lets you monitor all sorts of things at System or device level. We can warn you when CPU use runs high, entries appear in the event log, a key service is closed, a new app is installed etc etc. But, like all things there are limits. In your case, we can warn you of devices that haven't been used for X days, we can alert you if a PC is booted into safe mode, we can warn you if a PC is on and our agent isn't installed, but when someone unplugs a network cable, in essence at that moment we have no way centrally of knowing if they have disconnected the network, closed the lid on their laptop, or frankly anything else. The agent will still be capturing everything they do, and any restrictions enforced will still be operational until the device next connects to the network when the history information will then be sent back to the server. This PDF summarises the alerts available as standard with NetSupport DNA - http://www.netsupportdna.com/pdf/DNA_Proactive-Alerting.pdf I did this video summary to highlight the main alerting features in NetSupport DNA, which may help So as a network manager monitoring the whole school, no you won't get an alert specfically if a network cable is unplugged from a device - but as a teacher in a classroom where you are actively connected to your students - then Yes you will. In the classroom setting, using the Teacher App, where you are undertaking a real-time session with a group of students in the classroom, you would then of be notified instantly with an alert box if a student disconnected their network cable, disabled their wifi or powered their device off. In fact if they tried that as soon as it rebooted it would automatically rejoin the monitored lesson so they can't use it as a way of bypassing supervision. Hope that helps, but if you need anything else, then please scream. Al. 1
karldenton Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Glad Al sorted you out. Net support DNA is a great piece of kit. I am still learning about things it does and we've had it a fair while. Support is brilliant so anything you are stuck on or unsure of give them a shout and they are more than happy to help, even if it turns out to be a server issue such as TCP/IP pipes disabled they'll help you get it working. 2
