The Head has told me to ask Edugeek a question. So here it is:

How do you manage your school calendars? We are considering using Outlook, but we have looked at several other solutions too. We want to be able to edit the calendar in school, but have it in a form easy to publish to our website. Also, the data is on the website we would like parents, students and staff to be able to use an app to interact with the school calendar data.

Thanks.

All my schools use Google's calendar but the equivalent MS version should be fine.

We have lots of different shared calendars, so the head has one, the office, All staff etc and you can choose which gets displayed on our website, without needing to visit the website. All very handy.

We use miSOCS calendar. Department heads are marked as Editors so they can enter events. Assistant heads are marked as approvers so they can agree or delete events and it is on them to negotiate with the departments and then we have the Deputy Head as the gatekeeper who publishes once everything is confirmed. Publish events appear on the website and we the web developers have used the xml output to get the events over the next few days and display them. It has a category for Internal to stop certain events being published externally so a weekly internal calendar can be produced. People can add the calendar to their mobile devices or to their Outlook.
