Computing and Programming -VBox

Hi All

 

We currently use Virtualbox for running our programming software but have big performance issues when running software such as Visual Studio.

 

What spec machines are you generally running the software on and what sort of ram are you giving the virtual machines?

Ours are core i3/4gb ram, the VM's running a lite w7 with 2gb allocated. We don't use visual studio on them though as it is quite heavy (depending on use of course), just the python setup with idle etc.

SSD always seems to give the biggest bang for your buck, in my experience.

We have been running this on i5's with 8gb ram, the VMware runs with 4, has been ok for the last 18 months but now with introducing some rendering software as well as visual studio we are now looking again as they are slowing down which is effecting lessons.

I have a test machine with 16gb ram I've allocated 6gb to the VM, and the performance wasn't noticeable, next step is to try it on a new desktop with ssd. So hopefully that will improve things enough.
