SIMS Account Permissions

Hi all,

 

Our school office are going to set me up as a user in SIMS and have asked me what permissions I require. As an IT Technician what roles should I be set up with? We didn't have a technician previously so have never done this before.

 

Any assistance greatly appreciated!

If you're not going to be running SIMs users etc then what tasks will you be using SIMS for?

Our bursar currently administers SIMS for everyone, so for me I would mainly need access to staff and student data to export into services we sign up to for account creation and to help the office update our child photos in SIMS when we receive them from the photographer.

 

Just little admin bits like that, nothing too major!

If you click on the documentation button on the homepage in SIMS.net and select the SIMS Permissions button near the bottom of the documentation centre it will download a spreadsheet with everything you can do in SIMS.net along with which groups give that permission, using this you can work out which groups give the relevant permissions for what you need.

Is that on the documentation homepage or the permissions link? The homepage is stored locally and everything else is web based so it might be your firewall blocking it..

If there's someone at the School who's job is to administer SIMS, they should be telling you what permissions you need, not asking you and you posting here. That's a little worrying as that person is responsible for the security of SIMS at the school and should have an understanding of this.

As I may have posted previously, the Teacher who administered SIMS before me just granted sweeping powers to anyone above the level of teacher, it's taken me months to whittle them back down to what is needed.

 

Never assume a rational approach has been used before you arrived!

 

It sounds like you'd getaway with third party reporting and not much else.

 

Still as an IT Tech it may be worth getting system manager so that you can grant yourself specific permissions as you figure out that you need them... (all with the agreement of the current system manager/head teacher etc)

We did get a SIMS permissions spreadsheet from our LA SIMS Team which was good for defining everything, but still rather daunting as there were loads of options to choose from! I may look at going down the System Manager route which would make things a lot easier. Its just convincing the head/bursar that this is a logical move. When you think of it we're all exposed to sensitive data on children and staff on the systems we manage anyway so realistically it shouldn't be an issue!

 

Has definitely given me something to think about! Thanks for the advice! ;-)
