Hi all,

 

Over the last few days we have experienced two power cuts and our old UPS server did next to nothing, we need a new one.

 

So I am looking for recommendations/ideas of what you guys utilise.

 

I ideally want something that can send a notification if the UPS is triggered, but I assume that would need an internet connection which would subsequently be down?

 

 

What do you guys do? :)

What UPS are you currently using? also your core switches/internet router should be on the UPS precisely for this reason?

 

 

Our UPS is an APC one however it is around 10 years old ... needs to be replaced.

 

That setup is what I was considering, however to keep an internet connection we would need our core switches, Smoothwall, LGFL Firewall and Router all plugged in, as well as our three main Dell rack servers... that's alot of UPS power!

Ours sn a rack 8 outlet APC with a NIC installed.

 

You should be able to get an 8 outlet UPS with NIC now for under a grand.

 

There are other brands around but will the spares be available in the future ?

We are using 2 x 3000XL, one with additional battery pack and then a APC 2200 as well. This runs our server room for about 2.5-3 hours. Then the servers auto shut down and just the phone system stays up (for emergency phones) for another hour or so.

 

We have 6 dell poweredge servers, san, kvm, 48 port hp switch, 3 x 24 port switches and a 24 port Poe switch, voip phonesystem, cctv server, BT nte, smoothwall and a few other bits in the two cabs.

 

We keep a record of e batteries and unit install dates and they are on a rolling cycle so we replace a few batteries every year and a unit every two years.

That sounds expensive! But a very good set up.

 

 

I'm going to try to keep my budget as close to 1K as much as possible, I need to be able to run the core systems until I can remote in and turn them off...

 

It needs to have the capabilities to email me when the power has gone out :confused: , need to do some more research!

An APC 2200VA with 6 outlets might do it. With the optional NIC.

That will email you when you use their 'Powerchute' software bundled with it.

 

Should be able to do that for about £1K

That's actually the one I was looking at mate, sounds good to me.

The VA basically determines how many devices it can power and for how long.

 

This might be of help.

I'd go in excess of how many sockets you need right now - for expansion.

 

Powerchute is a little clunky and dated but it works.

 

It requires the optional NIC for the UPS, a 'server' machine for the control software and a client installed on each of your servers.

 

If you are in a VM environment, APC provide a virtual appliance that will do the 'server' part of it for you, rather than installing it on Windows - its very lightweight and also can be configured in VMWare and Hyper-V for hypervisor control.
