[Office365] the onmicrosoft.com domain

Is there a way to change a school's onmicrosoft.com domain?

 

When I first setup our Office 365, I created an onmicrosoft.com domain based on students*schoolname*.onmicrosoft.com and now when we host files on Office365 it shows as students*schoolname*.onmicrosoft.com which we don't want to show - it would be great to show *schoolname*.onmicrosoft.com instead.

You can't change it unless you open a new tenant and migrate the data.

I thought that would be the case, how difficult is it to migrate the data over?

No. You do not need to migrate to a new tenancy. I don't know the correct language to describe the process - but its possibly to add a domain. You need to go through a process to "prove" that you own the domain - by adding TXT records to DNS - and then you can assign users to that domain name within the tenancy. I started with a school.onmicrosoft.com (I assumed most did it this way), then added/registered our school.co.uk domain and went through the user list in blocks choosing the new domain name from a drop down box. You definitely don't need a new tenancy...unless you are restricted by RMunify or some other such sync product.

But your not renaming the onmicrosoft domain which is what was asked.

 

Also you method does no change the Sharepoint site from school.sharepoint.com

Ah yes. The most important rule in school when doing exams. First read the question....

 

Is it not possible to point your DNS entry for school.com at school.sharepoint.com or add an alias in DNS?

I asked the same question a few years ago. While you can mask it in some areas others you can't such as OneDrive

Just coming back to this as it's starting to bug me a little, does it matter if the onmicrosoft.com domain is students*schoolname*.onmicrosoft.com?

 

I've spoken to MS support and the URL on the sharepoint side of Office365 can be changed i just need to speak to them and get something changed.

 

I feel it just looks a bit odd having students*schoolname*.onmicrosoft.com as the tenancy name. I wish i knew back then what i knew now.
