Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - OneDrive placeholders return!

Finally MS have the OneDrive functionality we all want planned for next update

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will include a much requested capability, OneDrive Files On-Demand. This allows users of the cloud storage service to access remote files using Windows File Explorer without having to download them and store them locally on a device.

 

This ability to access remote files as if they were local is available from within desktop apps or Windows store apps via the Windows file picker. Files On-Demand supports both OneDrive and SharePoint Online team sites.

 

OneDrive has been bestowed with another feature, Offline Folders, which caches folders on mobile devices and allows them to be accessed even when there's no network connection. Offline Folders are available on Android drives for Office 365 Personal and Home customers and for OneDrive business accounts. Support for iOS devices is expected in a few months.

 

Typical it'll arrive after our summer imaging runs but still, progress at last.

No idea when this will be made available on VLSC. 1607 took months to become available, whereas 1703 wasn't long after initial release.

 

But it's definitely something that we've been waiting for, for a very long time. This sort of thing could eventually do away with on-site file storage, as long as the mappings work consistently in an enterprise environment.

About time, however Microsoft should just release the update to all other flavours of 10, given it already includes a OneDrive client built in.

A bit more info on how it looks. Amazing that after telling us how wrong we all were about Placeholders and that sync was the only reliable method for users to understand they've now made the exact same UI all the User Voice posters were asking for

 

It's the feature that likely makes a migration to Win10 worthwhile

The other question is of course, presumably it still has a Recycle Bin functionality and how do we backup files if all stored in the cloud?

Be interesting to see if there's a hook into the OneDrive API so the deleted file goes into the online recycle bin rather than the local one on the PC. You'd hope so given MS make both products but... it is MS

OneDrive Files On-Demand now available for Windows Insiders

 

At Build 2017, Joe Belfiore announced that the new OneDrive Files On-Demand feature will be delivered with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. And today, we are excited to announce that OneDrive Files On-Demand is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who are on Build 16215. The updated OneDrive client will be rolling out over the next few days but can also be installed from here.

Was hoping it was already there but pretty swift release from MS. Think Google releasing File Stream has made them up their game.
