Migration from windows 7 to 10 & SLT

Looking at migrating to windows 10 from 7 and wanted to know if anyone who has done something similar has ran the decision through SLT

 

Have confirmed with business manager to go ahead but he wanted something to present to SLT to approve the merge

We didn't in our MAT. It was considered part of the maintenance program as Windows 7 needs to go at some point, sooner rather than later with the new Intel processors.

The only part of it that really needed clarifying for us was due to budget, needing to replace over 100 machines that wouldn't run it. We're holding back until next year though but that's down to other issues.

It isn't too difficult to sell especially if you use 365, with better syncing and ideas such as UE-V which will all make staff's lives easier.

Our MAT does it via a change management process. So I present any significant change proposals to the SLT/Governors - I try to keep it short and sweet and do it like this...

 

Section 1) Introduction (i.e we use Windows 7, we've used it for x number of years etc)

 

Section 2) Business Options: I always include staying the same then two other options to show you have looked at different solutions. So like follows

Business Options

1)Maintaing the status quo (i.e no change): advantages/disadvantages of this and cost

2) Upgrade to Win 8.1 (for example): advantages/disadvantages of this and cost

3) Upgrade to Win 10 (for example): advantages/disadvantages of this and cost

 

 

Section 3) Recommendations: Your professional recommendation on what you think is best for the trust/school.

 

Sections 4) Risk Management (i.e what are the risks of your recommendations - how do we manage them. For example, Risk = Capita Sims does not fully support Windows 10 (just as an example I don't know if that is true!) - risk mitigation = confirmed working in test lab, support company confirms they will still support Win 10)

 

Section 5) Planning (how will I trial it, roll back plans in case it goes to pot, test periods etc)

 

If it is a big project, I normally do section 4 and 5 as a second document called, for example "Solution Implementation: Migrate to Win 7 to Win 10."

If I came to our SLT with such a plan they would all look at me with blank faces - needs to be simple and to the point, like explaining it to a 5 year old

i just went for it all 200 devices now windows 10 with hdd's swapped to SSD and the staff think im magic because it doesnt take 9 mins to boot and log in anymore

I just kinda told everyone it was happening and got on with it...

 

Of course it depends on the culture of the school (some SLTs seem to want to know every tiny detail of what's going) but it would be considered a bit odd if I took that to the SLT.
