As a university we are seeing the need for IPv6, some of the curriculum departments are seeing the need for it. Maybe it will fix the issues users have with multiplayer games.

 

So as a learning experience I've taken the plunge and requested an IPv6 range for my home kind of hoping they would give me a /56 for internal subnets but instead a single /64 range has being allocated.

 

I've gone back and asked them for a /56 but I'm not holding my breath this is BT and it took 2 attempts for them to acknowledge the fact I asked for static public IP's in the original order.

 

I know it is possible to subnet to the right of the /64 i.e. something like a /120 would be ample for devices on a small home network. So knowing it's not best practice and not something I'd do in production how much issue would having a single IPv6 /64 split up for subnets??

Nope, not if have any other choice. A /64 really should be the minimum allocation for a subnet. You loose lots of functionality if you go less than a /64, which would compromises the learning experience so much as you don't get to play with lots of stuff.

They actually gave me a /56 :-) .

 

Had some interesting experiences getting IPv6 through to my internal network. Ditched the BT Business Hub after hours and went back to a DrayTek 2860 cause the BT box wouldn't route IPv6 through to my firewall.

 

If anyone is going IPv6 over DSL connection with a DrayTek look at the following doc which is very helpful Native IPv6 Internet Connection Setup - PPP Mode unfortunately you have to log in to see the full instructions.

 

Take Backups at each point and export them for safe just in case you mess things up.

 

Basically:

1. Set your WAN 1 (DSL )port on the DrayTek for the VDSL as usual and make sure this is working for IPv4. In diagnostics test ping i.e. google IPv4 address through WAN1 interface

2. Enable IPv6 on the WAN 1 connection

3. On the IPv6 tab for the WAN1 connection in the Drop down box select PPP.

4. Setup any routes as needed to connect to your internal network/s by another Router/Firewall. You may also need to configure default route out through the DrayTek wan port.

 

So now I have Internal vLANS > MikroTik (used as router on a stick) > Firewall > DrayTek > BT DSL all working with 256 internal /64 subnets of if needed.
