Stormborn15 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Hi, I discovered last week that one of our HP PoE switches ( which services, WAP's and telephones) was showing a flashing red fault light and that 3 of the ports had stopped working. Logged the call with HP who logged at logs from the switch and their recommendation is to do a firmware upgrade... 1 - how safe is it to do one of these without messing up the entire switch 2 - Please do correct me if I'm wrong - does doing a firmware upgrade sort out faulty ports? TIA
SpaceInvader83 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 (edited) It can fix up faults like this yes and usually best to do the upgrade then HP will progress the support request if still no joy, firmware upgrade is safe if performed correctly, dual flash switch procedure is something along the lines of: BACKUP CONFIGS copy running-config sftp IPOFSFTPSERVER nameoffile.cfg copy startup-config sftp IPOFSFTPSERVER nameoffile.cfg VIEW FLASH INFORMATION show flash BACKUP PRIMARY FLASH TO SECONDARY copy flash flash secondary ALWAYS CHECK CORRECT UPGRADE PATH FOR VERSION THEN PROCEED WITH FIRST UPGRADE copy sftp flash IPOFSFTPSERVER firmwarename.swi primary reload CONFIRM SWITCH IS NOW ON DESIRED FIRMWARE show flash CONTINUE FIRMWARE UPGRADES IF UPGRADE PATH DICTATES Edited May 2, 2017 by SpaceInvader83

Thanks for the reply - my first proper foray into switches .. is it best I try this out of hours?... And will I be ok waiting for half term ie another few weeks ?.. ( but don't want HP to close the call until I'm done... ) Sorry - only just learned how to use PuTTY to telnet into the switch ( helped by HP) that's how green I am about this.. I know I need to get comfortable with this sort of thing ASAP though - so will be doing some sort of switch lab set up if I can... Thanks again :-)
pete Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 1) With the switch in a known-good state, pretty safe. Even with PoE issues on specific ports, still pretty safe. Just do it when people aren't using the device. 2) It depends why the ports are showing as faulty - did they explain their reasoning? Firmware release notes that fix something related, for example? It's more likely that the support rep needs to work through their checklist before they'll let you RMA it. 1

SpaceInvader83 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 HP Support will assist in a firmware upgrade if you feel more comfortable with them doing it, just make sure you have backups of the config (They will do this for you) and yes schedule for out of hours. 1

Fazza Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 In my experience with HP Support the first thing they have always asked me to do is upgrade the firmware on whatever the device is from a Server to a Switch, they wont assist you any further until you've done so. 2
jezi55 Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 We use a lot of hp switches here, I did a firmware upgrade on an HP1820 a few weeks back. If you can go to the IP address of the switch and login via the web interface, my switch had an option to download (and restore) the config. Download config, update firmware worked fine for me. If there was any issues i would have factory reset the switch and then reuploaded my saved config via the web interface. 1

Thanks - I think if this is possible via the web interface then I would probably feel more confident doing it that way.. Never a dull day in a one man IT team - always learning something new... I'm sure something drops out when something new goes in LOL
