mrforgetful Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 We're having some real problems with one of our rooms being vandalised and we cannot source the fronts anymore. Can someone give me/point me in the direction of some help in setting up a webcam that will record the classroom? I was thinking something that will record to a server. But I've no idea about any of this!

The latest issue of PC Pro contain this review: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/170910/axis-223m-network-camera.html That's on the more expensive side for IP cameras, but it does do images up to 1600 X 1200 - as the review points out, you want good enough image quality to actually be able to see who did what, not just a vague blur of pixels. The other problem is angle of view - I doubt that camera is going to cover the whole classroom (although at that price I imagine you might be able to find a specialist wide-angle lens that can be fitted). However, we're planning to use a simple covex mirror, as used for putting on corners of roads so you can see around the bend (around £30 off eBay). -- David Hicks

Sirbendy Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Our suites have 3 cameras apeice...cheapie coax dome cams all connecting back to a P4/3ghz XP rig with a Geovision GV900 16 port card in it. That works quite nicely..not a cheap card though. That said, there are other ones out there now... We've had vandalism, kids dropping trousers, football incidents, teachers getting paper planes in the head..loads of stuff...quite funny. Eerie watching them record at 3am for no obvious reason..
burgemaster Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 we use panasonic ip cameras, they are pretty cheap 69.99 and the piucture is allright, they all link back to the recording software (£170) located on a server, Been really successfull, caught lots of kids doing stuff they shouldnt.

I remember when a school I worked at in Cambridge got CCTV. The first incident it recorded was a pupil stealing bikes - the CCTV footage was good enough for us to recognise him and catch him. The second incident, a few weeks later, was the same pupil getting beaten up by the drug dealers he owed money to because he couldn't pay them from the proceeds of stolen bikes any more... -- David Hicks
gaz350 Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 sounds pretty successful then david 1st incident we caught was on a car park at weekend, 3 kids spent the entire weekend writing things about members of staff, so that everyone could read it come monday morning. What they forgot about was the CCTV camera watching them the entire weekend. i have no idea how they missed it. its a big basketballl sized dome on the side of the building........ we use axis here.A mix of 212(internal) and 232D+, 233D, 221 for external coverage pretty good cameras. The 212's are pretty cheap and are great for small internal areas.
adamchapman Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 we use Vivotek IP cameras in our ICT Suites and Recording Studio. 16 Cameras in total. They work really well but find that they take up a lot of hard drive space. With a 160GB HD for recording, we get around 10 days of footage if recording 24/7. We have just changed a selection of them to record in 'event mode' which is triggered by movement. They have been really useful to us, but also the teachng staff have commented on how behaviour in general has improved as the students know that every move they make is being recorded!
ChrisN-0123 Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 I use Zone Minder CCTV for Linux (can download a live cd for ease of install in minutes!) and Axis IP cams to monitor classrooms for damage. The quality of those Axis cameras are brilliant and helps us catch the offenders the same day the damage is reported.
