swiftysw1 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I would like to install a small CCTV system (8 Cameras total) .. I have run Ethernet's to the 4 local areas. But I would also like to install cameras in another area which is too far to run individual Ethernet's... In this area I was hoping to install a POE switch and the install an extra 4 camera from this POE.. What would I need..? Thanks
Edu-IT Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 You would still need the POE connecting to your core network. What do you mean by too far, physically to do or cable length?
psumner1992 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 You would need to run an Ethernet cable from your one switch to the second POE switch and then plug your additional cameras in via Ethernet to the second POE switch. Your first switch would also need to be POE to run the first 4 cameras. We have added extra switches in between our cable runs when we were beginning to exceed 100m, but we use Non POE switches and some POE injector units from eBay as it worked out cheaper at the time as our cameras only run at 100mb.
FN-GM Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 We have a run to a post of 4 cameras that is over 100m. We ran fibre to the post and then had a small 8 port POE switch with an SFP port in the post. It isn't expensive to install fibre, better than sticking switches in the middle of a run, its an added point of failure.
howartp Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 I've got two of these for POE as the cheapest option on ebuyer for 8-port POE switches. They have fibre SFP ports as FN-GM mentioned. Most 8-port switches still only have 4 POE ports so you got to be careful if you expecting more than 4 in future.
