Webcam software to capture still images

We take pictures of our students for their ID cards using a Microsoft Webcam. Recently we have purchased another one (making 5 in total) but this one refuses to work with the Microsoft software that all the others work with - this is the standard Microsoft software that comes with the cameras althougu it works with everything else we have tried it with. As we managed to miss the return window (oops) we are looking for some free software that can be used to capture photos. Most of the software we have tried works but is not suitable for some reason - AmCam (excellent but it would be cheaper to purchase another camera), YawCAM (requires Java, simple to stream but no "take a photo' button), various online services (great but we don't need the special effects). The Net2 application that we use to print the card works as well - but the people that take the photos are not technical and take them at enrolment/induction with the cards not being produced until several weeks afterwards by a different team

 

All we want to do is take a photo and store it as a jpg file - nothing fancy at all. Is there a freebie bit of software that can do this on Windows 7 through 10?

VLC? That can take an input and screen cap it.

VLC is good and would probably be my weapon of choice but the users taking the photos are not technical so the simpler approach of WebCam viewer suits our needs more, thanks for the suggestion though

Nope, the camera that doesn't work with the Microsoft software doesn't work in any computer but those that do work will work in any computer. The one that doesn't work with the Microsoft software does work with Webcam viewer - in any computer. Odd!
