I'm a fan of these announcements....

Exchange push email, salesforce apps....and presumable cisco vpn client for the iphone mean it's potentially a serious business tool.

iplayer i couldn't give a toss about but i do wish they'd include flash. Is there any reason why they won't ?

Regarding the iphone sdk, not had much exposure to xcode but does the fact you use the interface builder to create iphone apps mean it's the objectiveC programming language or nothing for writing apps ?

wasn't expecting many on here :p

on another note, I have started a discussion with our students via our vle about mobile phone use. It has amazed me how much they would rather use their mobile phones to do things than pen/paper.

I have been getting the general feeling that the kids are getting extremely frustrated by our complete ban on mobile phones (they must be turned off all day). Our school is pretty lucky, 99% of our kids are pretty good kids and great to talk to, if a little arrogant (they would probably get killed in 5 seconds if they went to a city school)

Its stupid, phones are becoming mini computers. Why dont we teach them to use them as a Tool instead of a toy to socialise with. After seeing the discussion our Head of Music brought it up with SMT, and the idea got shot down instantly (perhaps his approach was wrong).

My idea would be to have sessions in Tutorial, and get the kids to develop the rules + consequences should they abuse the rules. Giving them involvement in the process might make them police the usage between them.

Why are Teachers so scared of mobile phones? we already have 140+ laptops in our classrooms that students own and use all the time, so why not mobile phones too?

EDIT: just thought making a new post for this in general :p dont bother replying here!!

I have been after an iphone for about 2 years before they existed!

The new features and the potential the SDK brings means I am now shy of about 320 quid and am a very happy bunny :-)

Is anyone using these on the school network? I want to ditch the PDA and have a couple of things that would like to iron out to make things a touch smoother.

It connects fine but I have to enter my login details everytime I start safari(server\username then password) even though I specified them in the wifi proxy bit. It says I need to enter them to connect to the secure website. This is a bit long. I can't find a 'remember my password' type button. This is the only pain.

I can't access gmail from within work. Presumably the mail client is not looking at the proxy settings (??). Exchange works through IMAP.

Oh, did they every sort out copy / paste or not? Can't find it.

I'm quite excited about the SDK. It'll be interesting to see how the remote wipe works on the server side. I'll not be trying that on mine without a backup first though :)

@ dagza you'll be able to get your e-mail over EDGE. There could well be a filter somewhere in between your iPhone and the interweb that's preventing IMAP. My University doesn't allow IMAP out to the internet. (Or IMAP for connecting to exchange as it happens).

Copy and paste is still not a present feature....we live in hope.
