Google Expeditions not loading

I'm trying to get Google Expeditions running, but my devices can't see each other, they just sit there saying "looking for guide" or "looking for explorers". It works a treat at home, but not in school. A Lightspeed report on the two devices doesn't show anything being blocked; all outbound firewall ports are open.

 

Any ideas?

We had the same problem. I'd guess it's an issue with the network traffic not traversing subnets/VLANS but I couldn't find anything in Google's documentation to indicate which ports/etc it uses nor time to investigate it in any depth. We ended up just buying a local wireless hub for the devices to connect to. You can use the service offline if everyone using it downloads the 'expeditions' to their device before connecting to the standalone Wi-Fi hub.

 

Hopefully someone can suggest a better solution though as the local Wi-Fi hub is a bit of a kludge.

I couldn't find anything in Google's documentation to indicate which ports/etc it uses

All outbound firewall ports are open, plus as you said you don't need Internet connectivity so I don't think it is going through our Internet firewall anyway. 99% sure we're not port blocking internally, but I'll check that.

That's an option, I suppose. So, all I would need is a cheapy home wifi router, plug it in, connect everyone to it and then start using it, yes?

That set me thinking - it also works if you set up a phone as a hotspot. I'd only want to do that on a phone with an unlimited data plan though. Still a bodge, though.

We're probably blocking P2P internally, next step is to work out where, how and whether I want to disable that!

Thanks. Service Control / Bonjour is currently disabled on our network, but I need to turn it back on to get AirPlay running properly again so maybe that will get Expeditions working too...
