New UPS batteries

Hi all,

 

Just got around to putting new batteries in our UPS, but now it wont start up kept my finger on the on button for ages. It takes 18 12v motorbike size type batteries and they were new in the box but maybe a year or so old.

 

I assume they are "flat" and need charging before they will support a load, what are my chances of just removing the + and - plugs from each battery and slowly charging them one by one(yawn). They are in series, so I couldn't just attach to each side of the stack, as I would be trying to charge a 216V battery!

 

Its a Chloride PowerLan Green 7KVA floor standing whole room jobby.

 

Really don't want to buy a new UPS

The UPS should still start up, it simply means whatever's plugged into it will have little/no redundancy if the mains drops.

 

The fact you have 18 x batteries, I suspect it could be one of the connections that's not working, if they're in a series.

I've had all the connectors off and cleaned them, and I get a slight spark when I connect the pack up, so that should mean the series connection is complete?

But it could simply mean the battery you're connecting has some power stored within it, and is typical behaviour.

 

If the UPS worked before with flat batteries (just running off the mains), then I suspect it could be one or more of the batteries.

Be careful you can quite easily electrocute yourself with 7KVa of 216V battery.

I would have a word with their support dept as they are very helpful with set up advice etc.

Yes, it all came from Critical Power Supplies in 2010, so I should really talk to their support, see what they suggest!
