If you've ever wondered what cities of the future might look like, this new concept art from New York design firm Clouds Architecture Office has some beautifully outlandish ideas on the subject.

 

The firm has proposed a tower that, instead of being supported by the ground and reaching up into the sky, would instead hang suspended from an asteroid.

 

Named Analemma, the proposed skyscraper would be the tallest building ever created, and would travel thousands of miles each day between the northern and southern hemispheres in a figure-of-eight loop - including a daily pass over New York City...

 

An imagined conversation between a couple resident in the Analemma tower:

 

Person 1: Have you put on weight?

 

Person 2: Do you know I think I have. We should move to where the pull of gravity is lower.

The thought also occurs that this would sweep up any low orbit satellites, that would be a particularly annoying form of litter to have to clean up off your front garden / balcony!

Now all they have to do is work out how to capture an asteroid, invent super duper strong cables that can hold half a billion tons plus (going on the weight of the Burj Khlaifa). They also have to convince people it's not going to fall out of the sky.

It would have been more credible if it was built on the moon. The Burj Khalifa cost $1.5 Billion, the construction costs alone for this concept will be sky high/astronomical. The physics don't add up either, the skyscraper/earthscraper will be affected by gravity yet somehow the asteroid in space is not.

 

It's a great way for a small architecture firm to get their name put about though even if it is a couple of days early.

They could save lots of money by utilising an anti-gravitational trans warp field instead of using a cable to hang it from an asteroid as this would be more cost effective and also safer, this would be built on the Moon and accommodate many such futuristic buildings:
