Disbanding a XenServer Pool - Upgrading from 6.2 to 7.0

Morning all,

 

We have a large Citrix XenServer environment, all of our virtual servers span across two Hypervisors in one pool, the structure is something like this;

 

>XenPool

.............XenPool Master 1

....................................Domain Controller VM

....................................File Server VM

....................................File Server VM

.............XenPool Slave 1

....................................Backup Domain Controller VM

....................................SIMS VM

....................................Print Server VM

 

 

 

Now this was set up without shared storage, so arguably for no real reason.

 

 

So the time has come for me to take these Hypervisors out of the pool and upgrade 6.2 to 7.0 on both.

 

 

 

Has anyone done this, what are the potential problems I am going to face?

 

 

I have estimated the following...

 

 

1. 6.2 wont upgrade to 7.0 and a fresh install will be needed.

 

2. Removing Hypervisors from a pool will delete VMs So I will be backing up before the project starts...

 

3. Will an exported VM from 6.2 import to 7.0 cleanly? (This is a big worry of mine).

 

 

 

 

Any experts in the house?

I used to have a Xenserver cluster with shared SR which I always recommended people to setup with HA, served us very well for a good 8 years until we shifted to Hyper-V.

 

If you could add an SR to the Pool that is the way I would go then you could move your VM's to the SR and complete as in the above scenario, anything will do temporarily as long as it supports NFS and has enough storage.
