Afternoon all,

 

I am thinking about bumping our main site to be 10GB capable.

 

Currently we run a HP 4204vl as our main client switch with various other 48 port switches SFP'ed into it. No real core switch, JBOD of 1GB edges really with the modular HP in the middle, so sort of core!

 

I am thinking of a 10GB capable switch with mostly SFP+ gigabit ports, that would move into the core position, and all my edges plug into it, and give us some SFP+ 10GB ports for future use.

 

Anyone know any good switches that are more SFP than copper, and would perform the role? I have seen the HPE 5510 24G SFP 4SFP+ HI (JH149A) 28 Port Switch which has 24 SFP gigabit and 4 SFP+ 10GB, but not sure if only 4 10GB is enough, if that makes sense, once we see the benefits of it?

There's lots of good things being said about the new 10G switches from Ubiquiti, both the Edge and Unifi variants. The ES-16-XG has 12x SFP+ ports and 4x 10G copper ports and can be had for less than £500!

Reviews of the early firmware models slate it for incompatibility on the SFP+ ports and being released before it was ready, which is a Ubiquiti trait, we are the beta testers! think I need some real world stories before dropping the companies coin on one. If they sorted all the problems in the 1.7 firmware and there are some cheapish compatible SX fibre 1GB SFP modules which will work with it and connect up my mishmash of edges(3 dells, 3 ciscos and an HP, eek that's 384 copper ports!), then it could be a stupidly cheap aggregation switch and to think I was looking at £3-£5k on an equivalent big name box(still could be of course!).

 

Now I reread this, if I take 2 fibre ports off each switch I am already at 14, and there's only 12 ports, damn. Are they stackable? 2 of them are still in budget, use the 4 copper ports on each one for a 40GB interconnect and have 24 1GB/10GB fibre ports, crap rabbit hole, I'm off to read the manual!

Right, only 6 LAG's per switch. Only says 802.3ad, and doesn't specifically mention LACP, which would make things easier. Onto the maths...So my 2 Cisco phone switches are only 100mb, so no lags needed there(2 SFP), my 3 dells = 3 lags(6 SFP), my 96 port HP = 1 lag(4 SFP), interconnect LAG = 1(8 copper(probably overkill, so maybe only 2 CAT6 interconnects), leaves 1 cisco server switch and that's currently a 4 port copper LAG, which can go fiber, so 1 lag(2 SFP(can't remember how many SFP ports, so could be 4). So, all fingers and toes out, 6 SFP on one, 8 SFP on the other, all copper ports used(maybe). Leaves me for future use....3 LAG's on one member plus 4 SFP/3 LAG's left over, and 2 LAG's on the other with 6 SFP/4 LAG's over. Hmmmm could be a goer, 10GB core stack for the £1k mark, who'd a thunk it!
